Grendel wishes for his death to be viewed as an accident because he doesn't want Beowulf to receive any honor for having killed him. Grendel tells Beowulf that he has not won their battle, because he - Grendel - just slipped on the blood and wasn't actually pursued and killed by Beowulf.
