The legs of an isosceles triangle have lengths 2x + 4 and x + 8. The base has the length 5x - 2. What is the length of the base?

The lengths have equal length so solve for "x".
2x+4 = x+8
x = 4

Then base = 5x-2 = 5*4-2 = 18
