Extraneous variables

 In experimental designs, extraneous variables should be isolated and controlled because they can interfere with the relationship between independent variables and dependent variables in an experiment. Not controlling extraneous variables can threaten the internal validity of an experiment, where factors other than independent variables lead to dependent variables.
