A gym had 8700 members in 2010. Now it has 6400 what is the percent of change?

answer: 26.4%

This can be found by taking your new total 6400 and subtracting your starting number 8700. Then dividing that number (2300) by the old value (8700) to get .2643678....  Then all you have to do is convert that to a percentage, so 26%.
