Sam had to go tell Chris's parents, Billie and Walt.
Sam is Chris's half brother. The Alaska troopers found on one of Chris's employment papers that he was from Virginia. The McCandless no longer lived in Virginia, except for Sam. That is why he was chosen to identify Chris. Sam had to go to Maryland to inform the parents.
