Firstly, they were looking to get wealthy. The prospect of new land, to them, was synonymous with "money" and "riches". New land also held various opportunities for them, such as the discovery of new crops and foodstuffs. They could also expand their influence by conquering existing peoples. That, in the old days, was the end-all-be-all meaning of "powerful".
