Why does Rutledge use short and simple sentences in "Samuel's Memory"?

He used simple sentences in the essay to make it easier to understand and to convey the emotions of the story.  Rutledge also used simpler sentences because he wants to make it sound like a nine-year-old narrating a story about his experience when the Cherokee Indians were removed from their homes. 
Samuel's Memory is a true to life story of Samuel, a nine-year-old Native American about his journey and experience in the Trail of Tears.
