A triangle will always equal 180. Since the angle opposite of the 42 degree angle is congruent (equal), what do you think the adjacent angle equals?

Angles  on a triangle  add up to 180. The angles on the bottom are both 42. So once you add 42+42 you subtract the answer from 180 to get  the value of X.
42+42=84 
180 - 84 = 96

X = 96
