The two rival political parties during the 1796 election were the Federalist and the Democratic-Republican parties. The  former supported a strong federal government and was mainly  comprised by a wealthy intellectual elite. The latter was seen as the party of the people (hence the name), supported state government, and was comprised by diverse segments of the population (farmers, ethnic groups...).
