It says each one is smaller than the next one so keep subtracting 1
So what you want to do is simply find the volume of each. 
[tex]V=lwh[/tex]

V: Volume
l: Length
w: width
h: height

So for the first two:

[tex]V= 4*4*1[/tex]
[tex]V= 3*3*1[/tex]

Then you want to add the volumes of all four together.
