We have

5 meters of wood

1 meter = 100 cm

x m =170 cm

First, we need to obtain x that is the value of meters of 170 cm, that is 170 between 100

[tex]x=\frac{170}{100}=1.7m[/tex]

Then we can subtract 1.7 m of 5 m

5m-1.7m=3.3m

The wood is 3.3 m long now
