Why was the flamethrower created?

     The "portable or hand-held" flamethrower was created during WW1 by the German engineer Richard Fiedler. It was used first by the Germans, since one of their engineers invented it, taking out enemies with burning liquid. It mainly was used for defenders who were hiding or could not easily be seen as you did not need precise aim to hit.
