Why was the mongol empire historically significant?​

Answer:

Because they pretty much did the opposite of any modern civilization. While others focused on farming and staying put, the mongols went everywhere. That was one of the many ways that they were different, but what interests people the most is that they succeeded while others failed, and they became significant because they demonstrated that there is more than one way to thrive.
