Since the two lengths have a relationship to each other, you can use one variable for both
So the shorter length (n) plus the longer length (3n) add up to 180
n + 3n = 180
4n = 180
n = 45
so the shorter board is 45 inches, and the longer one is 3 x 45, or 135 inches.
