2. Multiply 1 by 3, put that answer, 3, underneath the 5

3. Add 3+5, then put that answer, 8, below.

4. Multiply 8 by 3, put the answer, 24, under the -8

5. Add 24 and -8 to get 16, drop 16 underneath

6. Multiply 16 by 3, put the answer, 48, under the 6

7. Add 48 and 6 to get 54. Drop 54 below.

Now there are no more coefficients to add the 54 to, so 54 is the remainder!
