f(x) = 3x - 1   when x = -2   f(x) = 3(-2) - 1

g(x)= -x + 6  when x = 5    g(x)= -5 + 6

f(-2) + g(5) = 3(-2) - 1 + (-5 + 6)

                 =  -6 - 1  - 5 + 6

                 =  -12 + 6

                 =   6
