According to the question

x + y = -42

x - y = 52

x = 52 + y

Now put the value of x in the first equation  i.e.

x + y = -42

52 + y + y = -42

2y = -42 - 52

2y = -94

y = -47

x -47 = -42

x = 5

Hence, the first number and the second number is 5 and -47 respectively
