When tariffs were placed on cotton how did that affect Britain and manufacturing of shirts?

It affected Britain because the majority of cotton came from the US and slavery back then. The tariffs would have made it harder to buy cotton and make clothes with the cotton because the prices were high and could be too high for certain people and industries.
