Answer:

To find the absolute you simplify the expression between the bars then turn the answer positive.

Example 1: |10-20|

First simplify -> |-10|        (10-20=-10)

Turn any negative positive and remove bars -> 10 (-10 becomes + 10)

Example 2:  |10+40|

First simplify -> |50|         (10+40=50)

Turn any negative positive and remove bars -> 50 (+50 stays +50)
