To anchor the plant in the earth, roots grow down. Water and nutrients are often taken up by roots and food is processed. A shoot grows skyward and develops into a stem that carries the rest of the plant with water and nutrients from the roots. Leaves are often supported by the stem so that they can collect sunlight.
