Answer:

In haciendas, the workers were not classified as slaves, yet their employment would certainly be called 'forced labor' in today's terms. Along with land grants, patrons would be allotted a certain number of 'natives', who would learn Spanish and be converted to Catholicism in return for their labor on the land.
