Why is St. Augustine important to the history of European exploration and colonization of America?

Answer: St. Augustine is so important because it was the first European settlement in what is now the United States. It was established by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, and unlike other colonizers, he wasn't out to find gold or set up a trading network with Native tribes.
