The Sumerians believed that success in every area of life depended on pleasing the gods. Even though this was the main duty of the priest, ALL Sumerians had a responsibility to serve the worship the gods. The priest performed religious ceremonies for the gods, and the people relied on them to help gain the gods' favor.
