Explanation:

African Americans were EXTREMELY poor and didn't have money to buy anything. They were SLAVES and were capt like prisoners. Barely any food to eat, or water to drink!!! SOME SLAVES  had to cotton pick in the summer and during cotton picking some of the slaves were weak and were beaten up!
