Each of the characters at the end of Act 1 feel disappointed because they know they won’t be able to manage living in the house and that’s why mama is giving Walter the money so they could buy their dream house and so that everybody else could be happy with their living style. The house represents happiness and so does mama’s plants but at the end of scene 1, the characters aren’t in the right mindset because they are slowly failing at managing.
