The Serpent, a brass-type musical wind instrument is believed to have been invented in 1590 by a French man called Edmé Guillaume. However it in 1743, Herbert Hyde claimed that the Serpent evolved from another musical instrument, bass type cornetto in Italy in the 16th century. It  was not  until the  18th century that this double-S like instrument began to appear in military bands and orchestras.
