Not totally sure if i'm reading the question right buuuut;

the answer is (I think) a poplar would reach 40 feet high in 5 years, while the red maple would reach the goal in 8.

Step-by-step explanation:

using division, 40/8 = 5 years

40/ 5 = 8 years.
