Gutenberg's press and the subsequent printing and sharing of philosophical essays about the role of the Church allowed for the Reformation to spread and take root.
Prior to the printing press, a person would have to hand copy a text. The printing press made it so hundreds of copies of texts could be printed quietly and shared widely allowing people to interact with new ideas.
