Answer:

Let x = smaller number

Let y = larger number

x + y = 40

y = x + 6

Substitute x+6 in place of y in 1st equation.

x + x + 6 = 40

2x + 6 = 40

2x = 34

x = 17

x + 6 = 23

17 and 23 are the numbers.  Larger is 23
