I can only name one category of serfs whose conditions improved during the reign of Catherine II, they were monastic serfs (serfs belonged to Russian orthodox church) and numbered 2 mln people. After secularization of church lands socage and natural taxes were replaced by monetary taxes. It of course improved conditions of this category of serfs.
