When electrons are removed from the outermost shell of calcium atom it's atom becomes positively charged with a charge of plus one. Which is also known as a "ion." Positively charged ions are called cation's and negatively charged ions are called anion's these also can change the element because it adds another plus or negative charge to the atom.

Hope this helps!
