The Gold Rush caused California's population to skyrocket in 1848 and 1849. The gold miners were also known as the '49ers' due to the largest inflation being in 1849. A good example is how San Francisco's population went from 1000 in 1848 to about 20,000 the closer it got to the 1850s.
