The answer is phenotypic plasticity. An organism will change its behavior, morphology, or physiology in response to changes in the environment. This is a more or less ‘immediate’ non-permanent state adopted without any changes in the genetic makeup of the organism.   An example is tropism response to environmental stimuli in plants.
