In glycolysis, glucose is converted to glucose 6-phosphate so it cannot diffuse out of the membrane. Then it is converted to fructose 6-phosphate. Why is this? Perhaps it makes it less stable so it is easier to break down into pyruvate? That is just a guess, is anyone able to provide more information about this?
